Coinbase Secures OCC Trust Charter Approval, Eyes Crypto-Finance Bridge

- Coinbase wins OCC conditional trust charter after six months.
- The landmark move strengthens ties between crypto and traditional finance.
On April 2, 2026, FinTech Weekly, American Banker, and TradingView reported that Coinbase received conditional approval from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) for a national bank trust charter. This approval marks a significant step in bridging cryptocurrency with traditional financial systems and provides much-needed federal regulatory clarity for Coinbase's custody and market infrastructure operations.
Coinbase emphasized that while it does not plan to operate as a commercial bank, accept retail deposits, or engage in fractional reserve banking under this charter, the company’s primary objective is to bring federal regulatory consistency to its operations. This is in addition to its existing operations under the oversight of the New York Department of Financial Services, where it holds both a BitLicense and a limited-purpose trust company charter.
Paul Grewal, Coinbase’s Chief Legal Officer, announced the development. This move follows similar conditional national charter approvals that the OCC granted in December 2025 to other leading digital asset companies, including Ripple Labs, BitGo, Circle, Fidelity Digital Assets, and Paxos.
This regulatory milestone is particularly noteworthy, as it could set a precedent for the broader cryptocurrency industry and create a framework for better integration with traditional financial markets.
Meanwhile, market data from 22:08 UTC on April 2 provides additional context to this achievement. XRP (XRP) was trading at $1.317, down 2.6% in 24-hour trading volume, while USD Coin (USDC) was priced at $1, up 0.006%. Similarly, Dai (DAI) held at $1, up 0.008% in 24-hour trading volume. These market snapshots highlight the cryptocurrency sector's ongoing activity as key players like Coinbase work to solidify their roles within a regulated financial system.
