On June 5, 2025, Cointelegraph reported that Ukrainian police arrested a 35-year-old man from the Poltava region. Police allege he hacked over 5,000 customer accounts of an international server hosting company to illegally mine cryptocurrency. This activity, known as cryptojacking, reportedly caused the company losses exceeding $4.4 million (185 million Ukrainian hryvnias).
The suspect allegedly began his hacking activities in 2018, exploiting security vulnerabilities in various international companies' systems. To avoid detection, he frequently changed residences within several Ukrainian regions. During their investigation, police searched the suspect’s residence, where they found computer equipment, mobile phones, and bank cards. In addition, they discovered evidence of his activity on hacker forums, email authorization data he used for hacking, crypto wallets, and software for managing crypto mining operations.
The accused faces charges of unauthorized interference in the operation of electronic information communication networks. If convicted, he faces up to 15 years in prison and could also receive a ban from certain IT-related positions or activities for up to three years. The pre-trial investigation continues, and authorities may file additional charges.
