- Q1 2026 DeFi hacks resulted in a $168.6 million loss, a significant drop year-over-year. - Step Finance suffered the quarter's largest exploit, losing $40 million via a private key compromise. On April 3, 2026, DefiLlama reported that cyberattacks caused $168.6 million in losses across 34 decentralized finance (DeFi) platforms during the first quarter of the year. This figure is a sharp decline from Q1 2025, when attacks caused $1.58 billion in losses, largely due to the massive $1.4 billion Bybit exploit. The quarter's most notable attack occurred on January 31, when attackers stole $40 million from Step Finance after compromising private keys on devices that company executives used. The breach forced the platform to cease all operations. Earlier in the quarter, on January 8, hackers targeted Truebit. They exploited a smart contract vulnerability that led to an integer overflow. This allowed them to mint tokens for nearly free, worth $26.4 million in Ether. The attackers then liquidated the stolen Ether, which underscored vulnerabilities in legacy blockchain infrastructure. On March 21, attackers targeted Resolv Labs in another major exploit. They gained unauthorized access and minted $80 million worth of unbacked USR stablecoin. This attack, similar to the one on Step Finance, involved a private key compromise and exposed critical security risks for stablecoin issuers. Industry experts note that cybercriminal activity in the crypto sector does not follow calendar seasons. Instead, it correlates with broader market factors like liquidity surges and evolving infrastructure. Both coordinated hacking groups and opportunistic attackers continue to exploit weaknesses in new and established protocols. These recurring breaches highlight the ongoing challenges for DeFi platforms. They must constantly fortify security measures, address systemic vulnerabilities, and navigate the complex, fast-changing landscape of blockchain technology.
