- Former NBA star sues crypto telecom for breach of contract and image misuse - $2 million lawsuit follows World Mobile’s contract termination and disputed token overpayment Retired NBA star Tristan Thompson has filed a $2 million lawsuit against World Mobile Group, a UK-based cryptocurrency telecom company, in Delaware’s Chancery Court, claiming breach of contract and unauthorized use of his identity after the abrupt end of their brand ambassador partnership. On May 29, 2026, Complex reported that Thompson’s legal action comes after World Mobile terminated their agreement, which began in May 2025. The partnership promised Thompson up to $1 million per year in WMTX token payments in exchange for promotional duties and a leadership role as Chief Digital Equity Officer, and World Mobile publicly launched the collaboration at TechCrunch Disrupt 2025 as part of its Uplift network initiative. The dispute centers on World Mobile’s claim that Thompson failed to return WMTX tokens provided in excess and then resold some of these holdings. Citing this as breach, the company canceled Thompson’s contract in March 2026. However, Thompson’s legal team argues that World Mobile used the supposed overpayment as a pretext to terminate the deal and notes that Thompson’s side had offered to settle the difference by adjusting future token payments, a proposal World Mobile rejected. In addition, Thompson accuses World Mobile Group of still using his name, image, and likeness in ongoing marketing despite the contract’s cancellation. The lawsuit therefore seeks $2 million in damages and a court order barring further use of Thompson’s identity, as the former NBA player looks to safeguard his post-basketball reputation and business interests. The case spotlights increasing risks for celebrities entering the digital asset sector, risks that have been heightened by World Mobile’s plummeting token price; according to CoinMarketCap, WMTX is now trading under $0.05, a steep drop from nearly $0.98 in February 2022. No resolution timeline has been disclosed, and legal proceedings between Thompson and World Mobile Group are continuing.
