Tether’s 2-Hour Freeze Delay Lets $20M USDT Slip Away
Planck

- Two-hour average delay in Tether’s freeze process exposes risks to asset control
- At least $20 million in USDT moved before freeze completion, highlighting vulnerability in multisig mechanism
On August 6, 2026, Cryptopolitan reported that blockchain investigator Darcy had uncovered a critical vulnerability in Tether’s asset freeze mechanism. The system is designed for speed; however, the process experiences an average delay of over two hours between the proposal and execution of a freeze on the blockchain, and this time gap allows illicit funds to escape before Tether locks them.
According to Cryptopolitan on August 6, 2026, Darcy’s analysis found that the mean delay of 2 hours, 16 minutes, and 15 seconds stems from the multisignature approvals needed to finalize each freeze, and this requirement opens a window for assets to be moved off-chain.
Cryptopolitan also reported that an examination of nearly 3,000 Tether freeze events in 2026 found that this delay enabled users to evade sanctions. In total, at least $20.4 million in USDT was completely transferred from 60 addresses before Tether executed the freezes, and another 113 addresses managed to partially move $35.5 million.
In addition, one high-profile case underscored the problem. Cryptopolitan stated that, following an Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanction on Iranian wallets, about $34 million was moved before Tether completed the freeze.
According to Cryptopolitan on August 6, 2026, the research attributes this vulnerability to Tether’s multisig process, which sophisticated actors exploit before restrictions take effect. Tether is known for prompt collaboration with law enforcement and often freezes assets proactively, while USDC issuer Circle usually waits for legal orders. However, the current delay weakens Tether’s claims to effective asset control and exposes the system to circumvention.
As of 15:09 UTC on August 6, 2026, Cryptopolitan reported that Tether USDt (USDT) was trading at $0.999, down 0.025%, USD Coin (USDC) was trading at $1, down 0.001%, and TRON (TRX) was trading at $0.327, down 0.072%.
