Ethereum’s Platåberget Testnet Goes Live Ahead of Major Glamsterdam Upgrade
Planck

- Public testnet opens for community-wide protocol trials
- Preview features include higher gas limits and proposer-builder separation
On August 17, 2026, the Ethereum Foundation opened access to the Platåberget public testnet, providing developers, node operators, and infrastructure providers a real-time environment to trial the forthcoming Glamsterdam protocol upgrade, according to the Foundation’s official blog. Platåberget simulates Ethereum’s mainnet transition and specifically enables the community to test critical protocol changes such as enshrined proposer-builder separation (EIP-7732), block-level access lists (EIP-7928), and anticipated higher gas limits prior to mainnet deployment.
Unlike previous long-term testnets like Sepolia or Hoodi, Platåberget is purpose-built to preview Glamsterdam features and does not function as a general-purpose testnet. In addition, Platåberget uses the existing mainnet state instead of a separate development chain and will hard-fork to Glamsterdam rules on August 20, 2026, to let participants trial the actual upgrade process as mainnet users would experience.
Industry reports from EtherWorld and Binance Square stated that the testnet is fully open from day one, and all community members can configure clients, access documentation, and request test ETH from the faucet. This openness marks a shift from earlier Glamsterdam devnets, which were private or restricted to select stakeholders and therefore limited broader community testing.
Key protocol changes under scrutiny on Platåberget include proposer-builder separation to restructure block construction, block-level access lists to expand transaction capabilities, and a planned gas limit hike from 60 million to up to 200 million. These upgrades present new challenges for contract size constraints, infrastructure costs, and tool compatibility, and the testnet is expected to surface issues for systems that assume current gas limits or fee models, so providers will need to adapt workflows and tools.
According to the Ethereum Foundation, Platåberget is a temporary testnet that will run for several months to collect community feedback and identify implementation issues. As a result, successful completion is expected to lead to Glamsterdam’s activation on Sepolia and Hoodi testnets, followed by Ethereum mainnet deployment.
On August 17, 2026, Ether (ETH) traded at $1,903.82, reflecting a 1.18% change in 24-hour trading volume, according to CoinMarketCap.
