Sony Group and TSMC have agreed to create Advanced Vision Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp., a $4.69 billion joint venture in Kumamoto, Japan, that aims to advance image sensor technology for smartphones, AI, automotive, and mobile devices.
On August 11, 2026, CoinDesk reported that Sony will hold the controlling stake in the new entity. According to CoinDesk, Sony will invest primarily through cash and asset transfers, while TSMC will contribute its expertise in advanced semiconductor manufacturing. Under the partnership, Sony will lead technology and product planning for next-generation image sensors, and TSMC will oversee the manufacturing process.
The venture is scheduled to begin commercial production in 2029. In addition to smartphone image sensors, the company will target broader markets including artificial intelligence, automotive applications, and mobile devices. As a result, the agreement highlights the strengthening of Japan’s semiconductor sector and underscores government support for domestic chip manufacturing, and it also bolsters the nation’s prominence in the global technology supply chain.
